Millbrae Recreation Center
In summer 2016, the Millbrae Community Center was tragically lost to a major structural fire. In response, the City commenced planning for a new center that reflects the diverse needs and desires of this unique community, offers an expanded range of spaces, and utilizes best practices in innovation, programming, and technology.
Group 4 was commissioned to explore and evaluate a wide range of solutions, and to investigate potential funding sources for both capital and operational costs in the form of a robust, community-informed feasibility study. The comprehensive approach and thorough understanding of community needs allowed the new facility to be tailored to the current and future Millbrae community.
Priorities included preserving open space for Central Park and working with adjacent Taylor Middle School to best position services, pathways, and shared use opportunities. The new 25,900 square foot recreation center is envisioned as a flexible, vibrant facility and multigenerational hub for the community, supporting recreational and social needs of all kinds. The center is designed to support independent use of various activity spaces to minimize operational costs and provide increased benefits to the entire community.
Construction was completed by the design-build team of Blach Construction and ELS Architecture and Urban Design.
